“Mahal Kita” means “I love you” in Tagalog, one of the languages spoken in the Philippines. This piece is a sonic exploration of the experience of learning a language as an adult and the desperation of trying to communicate with the ones you care about through different languages. Throughout the piece, the players speak several Tagalog words commonly learned when first learning the language while also mimicking the rhythms and cadences of the words with their instruments.
This piece was premiered by Hub New Music in Orlando, FL in June 2025.
World premiere performance by Hub New Music on June 13, 2025, at Timucua Arts Foundation in Orlando, FL.
